Xorroxin, the source of the Bidasoa River
Hidden in a lush forest of beech and chestnut trees, almost out of nowhere, a small waterfall emerges. This is Xorroxin, the source of the Bidasoa River, located in Erratzu, in the Baztan Valley. It is a small yet immense waterfall. It’s no wonder that Xorroxin is the source of the Bidasoa River, the river that runs through the heart of the region, from Erratzu to Hondarribia.
A walk from Erratzu to Xorroxin is a true delight for the senses. This 7-kilometer circular route allows hikers to explore the village of Erratzu and the Gorostapolo neighborhood, and to see bunkers, lime kilns, and chapels along the way. It’s an easy route to do with children and poses little difficulty for older adults.

At the start, the route winds southward, trying to avoid the traffic on the highway, until it reaches a narrow passage between orchards that leads us to the beautiful stone bridge over the Aranea stream.
The trail runs parallel to the Iñarbegiko Erreka stream and the road leading to the neighborhoods of Gorostapolo and Iñarbil, crossing two small bridges until it reaches a junction marked with posts, where the trail joins the cobblestone path that descends from the Gorostapolo chapel.
To reach Xorroxin, the source of the Bidasoa River, simply follow the signs for the old Local Trail until you reach a new bridge. You’ll enter a beech and chestnut forest, following the Iñarbegi stream. To avoid wading across it, take a trail on the left that passes by a first waterfall, which signals that Xorroxin is near.

Directions: FromPamplona or San Sebastián, take the NA-121A to Oronoz-Mugaire. Once in Oronoz-Mugaire, take the NA-121-B to the intersection of Arizkun and Erratzu. At that intersection, take the NA-2600 until you reach Erratzu.
