San Juan Xar Nature Reserve

The San Juan Xar Nature Reserve is located between the towns of Igantzi and Arantza. This natural sanctuary was designateda Nature Reserve in1987 because it is home to the only native forest of hornbeams (Carpinus betulus), also known as birch-like trees, on the Iberian Peninsula. Visitors can also see centuries-old chestnut trees, maples, oaks, and ash trees.

In addition, nestled within the reserve is the San Juan Bautista Chapel, whose interior is a natural cave that houses a statue of San Juan Xar.

According to popular belief, the water that flows from this spring has healing powers for skin conditions.

On St. John’s Day, June 24 , it is traditional to visit the San Juan Xar Nature Reserve. According to the ritual, one must drink from the three water spouts, soak a handkerchief in water from the three springs, and then rub the affected area. Finally, the handkerchiefs are left near the spring. A few days later, the priest collects them and burns them. This custom dates back a long time, and it is said that, before the image of St. John the Baptist arrived here, prayers and offerings were made to thelamiak—nymphs who, according to mythology, had inhabited this area since the dawn of time.
