The Baztan Route of the Camino de Santiago is the branch of the Camino de Santiago that crosses our valley from north to south. It starts in Bayonne and passes through towns such as Urdazubi-Urdax, Amaiur, Elizondo, Irurita, Ziga, and Almandoz before reaching Belate, where it joins the French Way—coming from Roncesvalles—in Arre. The 106.55-kilometer route through the Baztan region offers a chance to explore the valley’s landscape and towns. 

This branch of the Camino de Santiago was used during the long winters of the Middle Ages by travelers, pilgrims, merchants, armies, and kings, since the climate of our region is milder than that of the Pyrenees.

Currently, the Association of Friends of the Baztan Route of the Way of St. James, founded in 2000 and headquartered at the Elizondo Parish, is responsible for managing this branch. Over the years since the Association’s founding, it has carried out extensive cultural activities and has restored the Monastery of Urdax, the Chapel of Santiago de Urrasun, the road between Amaiur-Maya and Arizkun, the Berroeta hostel, the Chapel of Santiago de Belate, and the hostels in Lantz and Olagüe, in collaboration with their respective town councils.
