Leurtza
In Malerreka, between the municipalities of Urrotz and Beintza-Labaien, lies theLeurtza Natural Recreation Area, an idyllic spot featuring two small reservoirs nestled in the midst of a magnificent beech forest. Built in 1920, these lakes are well worth a stroll around; enjoy their blue waters and listen to the croaking of the frogs, as the red-bellied toad is among the diverse fauna that inhabits these surroundings.
There aretwo marked trailsthat highlight points of interest: the sculpture of the Rana Bermeja, which reminds us that this small amphibian is the area’s most characteristic species, and the Plaza de la Carbonera, which celebrates the historical use of these types of forests for charcoal production.
*A3.5-kilometer, signposted local trailwith a 60-meter elevation gain that runs along both reservoirs. This trail can be combined with another 9-kilometersignposted trail. (Trail Brochure)
*A 2-kilometer-long trail accessible to people with limited mobilitythat circles the lower Leurtza reservoir. For the blind: guided by a left-hand rail and Braille signage. For wheelchair users: the trail is accessible, but there are steeper slopes at the entrances to the lower dam.
Directions:From Pamplona or Irún, take the N-121A toward Doneztebe/Santesteban, then follow the NA-4040 to Urrotz. A 5-km paved road leads up to the Leurtza reservoirs.
