Bortziriak

Igantzi, Arantza, Lesaka, Etxalar, and Bera make up the so-called Bortziriak. These are five towns with the historical status of “villas,” whose character has been shaped by their proximity to the borders and the existence, from the 16th to the 19th centuries, of the first industrial workshops, known as “fererías.”

With the advent of industrialization, Bortziriak ceased to be a primarily rural region, and it is here that most of the industry in northern Navarre is concentrated.

The five towns are situated on both sides of the Bidasoa River, and their lush green landscape is dotted with farmhouses amid meadows, fern-filled glades, and forests of pine, oak, beech, and chestnut trees.
